Are You Feeling Scared To Go Live On Social Media?
The words that people say to us can have a lasting effect, leaving us feeling powerless and vulnerable. With the number of nasty people trolling around on social media just waiting for their chance to put someone down, it’s no wonder many of us get fearful of putting ourselves out there.
Over time, the things that people say to us can shape our own opinion of ourselves. This can lead to a fear of being judged, which if we are not careful, can negatively impact our relationships, jobs, social situations, and self-esteem.
However, I’m sure you know as a musician, singer, etc that it is so important today to get over that fear and start to go live online with your music because it’s the quickest and easiest way to get your music out there, grow a fan base and create some side income using virtual tip jars, etc
Try these 9 methods to overcome the fear of being judged and get your self-esteem back on track:
- Learn your strengths and limitations. Once you know your own strengths and limitations, you’ll be less likely to be affected by what others say. Their opinions on your abilities become irrelevant since you know what you are capable of.
- Have confidence in your own ability but be aware of what you cannot do.
- You may even surprise yourself at what your audience loves. Sometimes the songs or music that you don’t like can be what gets the most attention from your followers.
- Acknowledge that things do not need to be perfect. Human perfection is a myth. You can excel at your tasks without them being perfect.
- Rather than focusing on any imperfections, know that you are doing the best that you can – and that your best is good enough.
- In the online world, its called ‘taking imperfect action’ because you have to create so much content on top of your music, so let go of the fear of being judged.
- Understand that people will always have an opinion. Some opinions will please you and others won’t. What matters most, though, is your own opinion. Even though it can be hard to do, don’t let the opinion of others worry you or sway you, especially if you believe in what you are doing is right or best for you.
- Be aware of your inner critic. That little voice in your own head can become deafening at times, so it’s important to recognise when negative thoughts start to creep in.
- Once you start to recognise what triggers these negative thoughts, you can take the necessary steps to change them into positive ones.
- That little voice is a sign that you are letting your mind control you and your thoughts. Practising meditation on a daily basis is a great way to learn how to push those unwanted thoughts away and stay focused on the task at hand or your goals. I’m confident that adding meditation to your daily ritual will certainly help with that fear of being judged.
- Make yourself a priority. When you allow someone else’s judgment to cloud your own perceptions, you actually give that person power and priority over your life. You can take back control of your life by recognising that you are your priority, not them. Remember that it’s your business/career and don’t let anyone stop you from fulfilling your dreams.
- Invest in yourself. Enhance your personal growth and well-being by doing more of what you enjoy doing. Take time for self-care.
- The better you treat yourself, the better others will treat you as well, thus lessening your fear of their judgment.
- Learning more about how you can love yourself is the key to becoming that confident person you know you can be.
- Surround yourself with positive and influential like-minded people that are on a similar journey to you.
- Keep learning every day, not only investing in your own personal growth but your artistry too. The right people will notice and soon you’ll have an audience of raving fans.
- Know that your memories fade. Even though hearing someone criticise you hurts at the time, if you purposely put it to the back of your mind by thinking of something else, then the memory of this event will fade.
- There is only so much room in your memory banks, so you want to ensure that you aren’t giving these negative thoughts priority over more positive thoughts.
- One technique that has really helped me when I get a flood of unwanted emotion is to stop and breathe. Basically practising mental yoga. You can literally change your mental state of mind and even stop anxiety by changing your state. Recognise your thoughts and stop and calm down, take at least 4 deep breaths. Inhale deeply, hold for maximum then exhale maximum slowly. Repeat at least 4 times. Be mindful in the moment.
- Tell yourself that you are good enough. Looking squarely at yourself in a mirror and telling yourself that you are good enough can help. Practice this exercise several times each day – whenever you’re in front of a mirror. In the personal development world, we call these affirmations. Basically affirming to yourself the good things you want to happen in your life or your self-growth as a person or confident musician. Practising affirmations daily will definitely help build your self-esteem and overcome the fear of being judged.
- Repeat the affirmation that you are good enough off and on throughout the day, especially when you feel doubt creeping in.
- Soon, you will automatically think about how you are good enough every time you see yourself. Your self-talk will automatically start to gravitate to the positive.
- Consistent, positive reassurance such as this can help overcome the fear of failure and being judged. To get started with affirmations CLICK HERE.
- How others value you, does not define who you are. Self-esteem is what we think and feel and believe about ourselves. Self-worth is recognising ‘I am greater than all of those things.’ It is a deep knowing that I am of value, that I am loveable, necessary to this life, and of incomprehensible worth. Never settle for anything less than your worth and your happiness.
